What is PTE Academic?
PTE Academic has been around since 2009. It is the test for anyone going to a university or college abroad. It is recognized by more than 3,000 institutions internationally; some universities from the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada accept it.
Once you appear in PTE Academic, then you will encounter content related to university levels. You will be given lectures regarding history, economics, environmental science, etc. You will read passages that feel like they came out of an academic journal. You will be required to explain the graphical presentation. The word count of your essay should be from 200 to 300 words on the given specific topic.
This is to test your ability to cope in an actual university environment. Can you follow what a professor is saying? Can you read and understand dense academic text? Are you able to structure an argument?
The PTE Academic score can be used for visa applications for Australian PR, UK visa applications, and the Canada study permit application process through SDS. This means that the test is quite wide-ranging.

What is PTE Core?
PTE Core is the newer one. It was launched by Pearson in October 2023, and it was officially approved for Canadian immigration by IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) in November 2023.
Prior to the introduction of PTE Core, if one intended to apply for Canada PR under Express Entry or any other IRCC route, they could use either IELTS GT or CELPIP. That was it. The PTE Core IRCC approval in late 2023 gave candidates a third option, and it has quickly become very popular among Indian applicants in 2026.
The content in PTE Core is built around everyday, practical English. You will not find academic lectures here. Instead, you will hear a conversation between two coworkers. The first thing you will do is read an announcement about your workplace or your community. In the writing part, you have to write a 100-word email, but not an essay. For the speaking part, there is a task known as “Respond to a Situation.”
The entire test is about the English you use in a job, in a community, in real Canadian life.
PTE Core is accepted by IRCC for Canada PR, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP), Canadian work permits, and Canadian citizenship. That is its lane, and it stays in it.

Differences in Formats of the Tests
The formats of the two tests share four common components: Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening. However, the nature of activities within those components differs.
For example, in the Speaking component of the test, PTE Academic includes such a task as “Retell Lecture.” It requires listening to an academic lecture and retelling its contents in your own words. In PTE Core, there is no “Retell Lecture.” However, in this case, there is a task called “Respond to a Situation” that requires the test taker to listen to a conversation and reply in the way a person replies in a real-world situation.
In the Writing section of PTE Academic test, the candidate is required to write an essay of 200 to 300 words on an abstract topic. Similarly, in PTE Core, candidates have to produce a short essay. But the main task in the writing component in this latter case is producing a 100-word email in a polite tone.
Finally, in Reading, there are “fill-in-the-blanks” and multiple-choice questions for both exams. Moreover, in PTE Academic, there is also a “Re-order Paragraphs” task. Reading texts in Academic are taken from journals and textbooks. In Core, you are reading memos, newsletters, and everyday articles.
The Listening section also overlaps in some tasks, like Write from Dictation and Highlight Incorrect Words. But the audio content is completely different. Academic uses university lectures. Core uses office conversations and public announcements.

How Scoring Works for Each Test
Both tests use the same 10 to 90 score scale. And both are scored by Pearson’s hybrid AI scoring engine. So far, same. But the interpretation of these scores is completely different.
The scores on the PTE Academic exam are standardized based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The institutions usually have a requirement of score ranges between 58 (B2 level) and 73 (C1 level). Some highly competitive programs ask for 79 or above.
PTE Core scores are mapped against the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level. This is the scale that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada employs when evaluating English proficiency for immigration purposes. The higher the CLB level is, the more CRS points one gets, making him or her eligible to receive an invitation to apply for permanent residency status.
When it comes to Express Entry aspirants, there is only one goal that is to achieve CLB 9. Here is what CLB 9 looks like in actual PTE Core scores:

One thing that surprises many students is both tests cost exactly the same.
The PTE Core test fee in India in 2026 is ₹18,900. The PTE Academic fee also comes to ₹18,900. Both come with the base registration fee of ₹16,016 plus 18% GST. Pearson increased the fees in India recently, so if you have seen older figures floating around online, this is the current price you should budget for.
Both tests can be taken at Pearson VUE test centers, which can be found in all big cities throughout India, even in Kerala.
What you should be aware of with respect to cancellation is that, in case you cancel your booking either before 14 days from the test date or after it, then you will get a full refund. But you may not get any refund if you cancel your booking just before the 14 days from the test date.
Which is More Difficult, PTE Core or PTE Academic?
This is a frequent query, especially among Indians planning to take the test in 2026. The truth of the matter is that while PTE Core is comparatively simpler, there are certain aspects about the exam that could shock you.
Why PTE Core feels easier:
It will be a common vocabulary. You will never see a passage talking about the principles of quantum mechanics or the theory of economics in the 19th century. These are words that you use frequently or come across regularly.
Composing a 100-word letter at work is much easier compared to composing a 300-word structured essay. The cognitive load is genuinely lower.
There is no “Describe Image” task and no “Retell Lecture,” which many candidates find among the most difficult tasks in PTE Academic.
Where PTE Core catches students out:
The “Respond to a Situation” section will be marked based on your command over the language as well as your tone.
