I know why you are here. So you have decided to take the PTE this year, right? It’s a good choice. But here is something a lot of students do not realise until it is too late: the exam you are reading about on most websites is not the same exam you will sit in the test centre today. The PTE exam pattern 2026 has gone through real changes since August 2025, and if your preparation is based on old materials, you are already behind.

What are the Major PTE Exam Changes in 2026?
Duration: 2 hours 15 minutes
The PTE 2-hour exam format is not a 2-hour exam anymore. The PTE test duration has gone up to roughly 2 hours and 15 minutes. The reason is simple, two new speaking tasks have been added. You will be asked between 52 to 64 questions depending upon the version of the test that you are taking. Speaking & Writing, Reading and Listening continue to constitute the number of sections.

The scoring system has changed, AI alone does not grade everything anymore This is the change that affects how you should prepare more than anything else.
For years, the automated scoring PTE system used AI to grade almost everything. The new PTE pattern 2026 introduces what is called a hybrid scoring model, a combination of AI and human reviewers. The AI still grades things like fluency and pronunciation. But for tasks that involve expressing ideas like writing an essay, describing an image, or responding to a situation, human reviewers now check the content.
What this means for you is very direct: memorized templates do not work anymore. If you write the same essay structure that ten thousand other candidates also wrote, the human reviewer will notice. The PTE exam changes 2026 are designed to reward genuine communication, to communicate what you actually think in your own words clearly and naturally. That is a good thing, honestly. It just means you need a different approach.
PTE Exam Section-Wise Breakdown
Now let us go through the PTE section-wise breakdown 2026.

Speaking and Writing: 76 to 84 Minutes
The speaking and writing section takes up the first big chunk of the exam. It runs anywhere from 76 to 84 minutes and covers both skills in one go. There are 9 task types here, which are 7 speaking tasks and 2 writing tasks.
1. The Speaking Tasks
- Read Aloud
A short paragraph appears on screen. You simply speak out the text into the microphone. Seems like an easy process, however, this is one of the most important tasks that influence both Speaking and Reading scores at once. Do not try to be a robot; speak as naturally as possible, because the AI analyzes your pronunciation and oral fluency, so do not hurry or drag it.
- Repeat Sentence
You hear a sentence once and then repeat it back exactly. This one tests your memory, pronunciation, and listening all at once. There is no shortcut here, you either catch the sentence or you do not. Practising with audio clips of varying lengths helps a lot.
- Describe Image
You will be shown a graph, image, or map on the screen. You have 25 seconds to view it and 40 seconds to explain it. While explaining just cover the main point or trend clearly. A good structure is: say what the image is showing, mention the key detail, and give a brief conclusion if you can.
- Re-tell Lecture
You listen to a short audio clip, a mini lecture, sometimes with an image. After it ends, you summarise what was said in your own words. The retell lecture PTE task rewards students who take notes during the audio. You do not need to remember everything, just two or three main points are enough to build your response around.
- Answer Short Question
A question plays through audio. You answer with one word or a short phrase. These are usually simple general knowledge questions, things like “What do you call a doctor who performs operations?” Keep it brief and accurate. No need to explain.
- Summarize Group Discussion (Brand new in 2026)
This is one of the two new PTE pattern 2026 tasks. You hear an argument between three different individuals on a particular subject. After the audio clip ends, you will get only two minutes to summarize what the discussion entailed, who talked about what and what conclusion they came to. In this case, you shouldn’t repeat any single individual’s perspective. Acknowledge all three perspectives briefly. This task is scored on content by human reviewers, so make sure your summary actually reflects the discussion.
- Respond to a Situation (Brand new in 2026)
This is the second new task in the PTE speaking tasks list 2026. You are given an everyday life scenario, which you are supposed to react just like you would in reality. You speak your response in about 30 to 40 seconds. AI checks your fluency and pronunciation. Human reviewers check whether your response actually makes sense for the situation. Natural, direct responses work best here. Do not recite a memorized script, it will show.
2. The Writing Tasks
- Summarize Written Text
You will have to read a text of about 300 words, after which you must write one sentence which would convey the main point. The number of words required to be written in the sentence ranges from 5 to 75. One sentence only. Make sure it is grammatically correct and covers the key point.
- Write Essay
In twenty minutes, you have to write an essay on a specified topic in 200 to 300 words. Now that you have been introduced to the human review PTE essay, what really matters is your content, logic, and coherence in your writing. No template can help you now. Just pay attention to the prompt, take a stand, justify it, and conclude!
- Reading: 22 to 30 Minutes
The PTE reading time and questions 2026 window is tight. You have 22 to 30 minutes for the entire section, and there are 5 task types, so time management is necessary. If you spend too much time on one passage, then you won’t be able to finish all of them.
- Fill in the Blanks: Dropdown
A passage appears with several blanks, each with a small dropdown menu. You choose the correct word from each dropdown. Around 5 to 6 of these. Read the sentence around the blank carefully, the surrounding words usually make it clear which option fits.
- Multiple Choice
After reading a passage, mark all the right answers from the list provided. Note that negative marking applies in this case, meaning choosing an incorrect answer will subtract marks. Only select what you are sure about. If you are stuck between two options and not confident, leave the doubtful one.
- Re-order Paragraphs
The text boxes are placed in random order on the right-hand side of the screen. All that you need to do is place the text boxes in correct order on the left-hand side of the screen. It is important that you pay heed to the transition words, such as however, therefore, as a result, or in addition, that show the connection between the boxes. If a particular box begins with “This resulted in many changes,” then it definitely follows the problem/issue box. Those cause-and-effect signals are your best clue.
- Fill in the Blanks: Drag and Drop
A passage with blank spaces and a word bank below. Drag the right word into each blank. Not every word in the bank gets used. After reading the passage once to understand the gist of it, fill in those blanks that seem easier to guess first.
- Multiple Choice, Single Answer
One correct answer from several choices based on a reading passage. Straightforward. Eliminate obviously wrong options first and then choose from what is left.
A quick note on scoring in Reading: Most tasks here give you partial credit. In Re-order Paragraphs, for example, each correct pair of adjacent boxes earns you marks even if the whole sequence is not perfect. So do not give up on a question just because you are unsure of the full order, get the parts you know right.
3. Listening: 31 to 39 Minutes
The PTE listening question types 2026 section is the last part of the exam. By now, you have been sitting for over two hours. Mental tiredness is real at this point. The single best thing you can do is practice note-taking during audio, even just jotting down two or three keywords gives your brain something to hold onto when the audio stops. There are 8 task types in Listening:
- Summarize Spoken Text
For this test, you have to listen to an audio passage which will last for around 60 seconds to 90 seconds, and then write a summary which would consist of 50 to 70 words. Ten minutes are provided to you for writing this summary. It is a significant part of your score.
- Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers
Listen to an audio clip and select all the correct answers. Like the Reading version, this has negative marking. Choose carefully.
- Fill in the Blanks: Type In
A transcript of the audio plays on screen with some words missing. You type in the missing words as you hear them. Spelling counts. There is no spell-check.
- Highlight Correct Summary
After the audio, you pick the best written summary from four options. Read all four before the audio if you can, it helps you listen for the right things.
- Multiple Choice, Single Answer
One correct answer from the options. No negative marking. Always attempt it.
- Select Missing Word
The beep sound appears at the conclusion of the audio recording. You must select the appropriate word or phrase to complete the sentence. Listen carefully to the entire audio recording since the first part will tell you what follows next.
- Highlight Incorrect Words
A transcript is on screen while the audio plays. Some words in the written transcript are different from what is actually spoken. Click on those words. Be careful, this task has negative marking, so clicking on a word that was correct in both versions will cost you marks.
- Write from Dictation
A sentence plays once. You type it out exactly. Every word, every spelling. Write from Dictation carries some of the heaviest marks in the entire listening section and also contributes to your Writing score. Practice this one daily if you want a score improvement you can actually see.
Note-taking tip for Listening: During audio tasks, write down nouns and verbs, the content words. Skip the smaller connecting words like “the” or “and.” When the audio ends and you need to write or respond, those key content words are what help you rebuild what was said.
PTE Scoring System 2026: How Is It Graded?
The PTE scoring explained 2026 is worth understanding properly because it affects which tasks you should prioritise. Each communicative skill like Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening gets its own score on the 10 to 90 point scale. You also get an overall score. The communicative skills score for each is calculated based on how you performed across all the tasks that test that skill.
Here is the part that surprises a lot of students: many tasks feed into more than one skill score. This is the integrated task design of the Pearson Test of English Academic, and it works like this:
- Read Aloud: goes toward both Speaking and Reading
- Summarize Written Text: goes toward both Writing and Reading
- Write from Dictation: goes toward both Listening and Writing
- Summarize Spoken Text: goes toward both Listening and Writing
So a task like Read Aloud is not just a speaking exercise. If you do it well, it lifts two scores at once. If you do it badly, it brings down two scores. This is precisely why you should spend more of your practice time on such integrated exercises.
The automated scoring system of PTE measures your fluency, pronunciation, accuracy, and vocabulary through AI. The human component, introduced in the PTE exam changes 2026, reviews content quality in the tasks mentioned earlier. The final score on your PTE scoring and score report 2026 usually arrives within 48 hours of your test, which is one of the biggest practical advantages of PTE over other proficiency tests.
PTE Academic vs PTE UKVI 2026
The exam content and format are identical. The difference is purely administrative. PTE Academic is recognized for admission to universities and immigration purposes in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and many other countries. The test that is authorized by UK Visas and Immigration for UK visa applications is known as PTE UKVI. If you are going to the UK, you need to book the UKVI version at an approved test centre. If you are going anywhere else, standard PTE Academic is fine.
